Robert E Lee IV, a 4th generation nephew of the Confederate General Robert E Lee, has been forced from the pulpit , by bigotry and racism after delivering a heartfelt and emotional speech during the MTV awards in August. Lee’s speech before introducing the mother of Heather Heyer, the woman killed when a white nationalist plowed his car through a group of anti-nationalist at the Alt-Right Rally in Charolettsville Virginia last month, repudiated his ancestor’s alignment with the hateful, violent rhetoric and symbolism associated with the Alt-Rights racist beliefs.
Here is the speech delivered at the awards show.
“My name is Robert Lee IV; I am a descendant of Robert E. Lee, the Civil War general whose statue was at the center of violence in Charlottesville. We have made my ancestor an idol of white supremacy, racism and hate. As a pastor it is my moral duty to speak out against racism, America’s original sin. Today, I call on all of us with privilege and power to answer God’s call to confront racism and white supremacy head-on. We can find inspiration in the Black Lives Matter movement, the women who marched in the Women’s March in January and especially Heather Heyer who died fighting for her beliefs in Charlottesville.”
According to Mr Lees, his commitment to the stand against white supremacy, directly lead to the backlash face by himself and the church he lead. The MTV speech push him and his parishioners over the edge.
