The India Supreme court has banned the Muslim practice of Talaq, ruling it unconstitutional. Talaq means repudiation. It refers to the husband’s right to dissolve the marriage by simply announcing to his wife that he repudiates her. Due to the financial responsibilities which he has to bear, the right to divorce in Islam is primarily given to the husband. Reportedly upon saying the word Talaq three times, the marriage is legally dissolved. The husband doesn’t even have to say it in person, he can text, skype or email the message. The court has put a six month ban on the practice, until a formal law is put into place. The ruling has been regarded as a victory for women’s rights.
