I wanted to publish the story about Briann R. Brochu when I first read it a couple weeks ago, but I was so disgusted. Brochu has been expelled from the University of Hartford and will forever be known as Toxic Brochu (TB) to this paper. Hartford issue this statement when confronted with the crime. The story went national when TB celebrated her crime on a social media platform writing, “Finally did it. Yo girl got rid of her roommate!! After 1 1/2 month of spitting in her coconut oil, putting moldy clam dip in her lotion and rubbing used tampons on her backpack, putting her toothbrush in places where the sun doesn’t shine, and so much more I can finally say goodbye Jamaican Barbie.” After the revelation, TB was charged with third-degree criminal mischief and second-degree breach of peace, both misdemeanors. I thought immediately after I read it that TB did this heinous act because the victim was black. This is got to be some kind of hate crime or civil rights violation. I am extremely pleased to see the law finally came to its senses and Toxic Brochu is being charged with intimidation based on bigotry or bias, a felony under Connecticut statue, “Sec. 53a-181j. Intimidation based on bigotry or bias in the first degree: Class C felony. (a) A person is guilty of intimidation based on bigotry or bias in the first degree when such person maliciously, and with specific intent to intimidate or harass another person because of the actual or perceived race, religion, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation or gender identity or expression of such other person, causes serious physical injury to such other person or to a third person.” The class C felony is punishable by one to 10 years in prison, a fine of up to $10,000, or both . We believe the victim should sue the hell out her and the university. We will be following this case. A precedent has to be set. Toxic Brochu should get some jail time. She has caused “great harm” in college communities all across the country. Students need to know that this type of behavior will not be tolerated and that there will be zero tolerance. If you do it, you are going to jail.
