Police shot Stephon Clark six times in the back. Where they do that at? The unarmed black man was not facing he police when they opened fire. According to a private autopsy requested by his family Clark was shot 8 times altogether. Clark was shot and killed March 18 in his grandparents’ backyard in south Sacramento. Officers were responding to a call about a person breaking car windows at night when a Sacramento County sheriff’s helicopter led officers to Clark, who began to run away. The two responding officers believed he was armed and fired 20 rounds at Clark, police said. Investigators later discovered Clark was holding a cellphone. Civil Rights Attorney Benjamin Crump, who is representing Clark’s family, released the independent autopsy report at a news conference Friday. “The narrative that had been put forth was that they had to open fire because he was charging at them. Well, obviously, based on Dr. Omalu’s findings in the family’s autopsy, it suggests all the bullets were from behind.” The police released the following statement after the shooting, ” As officers followed Clark into the yard, he “turned and advanced toward the officers while holding an object” extended in front of him. The officers said they shot Clark because they believed he was pointing a gun at them, but investigators only found a cell phone near his body.” During the service Thursday, the Rev. Al Sharpton vowed to press for justice as he delivered the eulogy for Clark at Bayside of South Sacramento Church. “We will never let you forget the name of Stephon Clark until we get justice.” Attorney General Xavier Becerra’s office will provide oversight of the investigation and conduct a review of the police department’s policies and use-of-force training. The decision of whether to bring criminal charges against the officers involved remains with District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert, although Becerra said his office could also bring charges.
