Dennis Edwards, 1943 – 2018

Dennis Edwards Jr. was  a lead singer in The Temptations, on Motown Records. Edwards was born February 3, 1943 and passed away just 2 days before his birthday on February 1, 2018. He would have been 75 years old. Edwards joined the Temptations in 1968, replacing David Ruffin and sang with the group on and off from 1968 to 1989. Chicago police are now  investigating the death the Grammy-winning member of the Temptations, who died last week. At the time of his death, Edwards’ widow, Brenda Edwards, said he died because of complications from meningitis, however, law enforcement officials are disputing that claim. Court documents filed by an adult protective services investigator allege that weeks before the singer’s death, Brenda Edwards abused her husband. “It’s an open and ongoing investigation at this time,” Laura Amezaga, a spokesperson for the Chicago Police Department said. An emergency protection order filed in January by the Health Care Consortium of Illinois, which investigates elder abuse cases for the state, alleges the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee suffered from neglect and abuse at the hands of his wife in the last months of his life. Mrs. Edwards put out a statement saying, ” I loved Dennis and we were married for 18 years. I would have never done anything to harm him. These allegations are false and defamatory and will be proven as such. Until this is all over, I have no further comment.” Edwards was admired by singer Aretha Franklin, who stated he was the inspiration behind her 1972 R&B/Soul song Day Dreaming. Edwards was briefly married to Ruth Pointer, whom he wed in Las Vegas in 1977. The couple had one daughter, Issa Pointer, who became a member of her mother’s vocal group, The Pointer Sisters.
