Remington Bites The Bullet

Firearms maker Remington Outdoor Co. sought bankruptcy protection Sunday, in the face of a heavy debt load, falling sales and lawsuits tied to Sandy Hook school shooting.  Remington is America’s oldest gun maker and is claimed to be America’s oldest factory that still makes its original product. Remington is the largest U.S. producer of shotguns and rifles. The company has developed or adopted more cartridges than any other gun maker or ammunition manufacturer in the world. Its products are distributed in more than 60 foreign countries. Remington had announced a plan to build a new state-of-the-art plant in Huntsville, Alabama making the AR-15 style semi-automatic rifles from Bushmaster and Remington R-15 and 1911 style R-1 pistols in the new plant. I guess they are going to have to put that on the wood pile for now. The chapter 11 filing, announced last month, was delayed after a Feb. 14 school shooting in Parkland, Fla., that left 17 dead and reawakened the national debate surrounding gun regulations. They also face years of litigation after a Remington Bushmaster rifle was used in the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting in Connecticut in 2012 that killed 20 children and six adults.  The Sandy Hooks massacre was the deadliest mass shooting at either a high school or grade school in U.S. history and the fourth-deadliest mass shooting by a single person in U.S. history. The deadliest mass shooting committed by an individual in the United States happened in Las Vegas in 2017, leaving 58 people dead and 851 injured. Katie-Mesner Hage, an attorney representing Sandy Hook families in a lawsuit against Remington, said in a prepared statement that she did not expect the gun maker’s bankruptcy would affect their case.

* These massacres are the deadliest in modern history, which means records were made of these events.
