You Can’t Make This Stuff Up

Tiesha Davis lease was not renewed because of what?

Tiesha Davis was informed that her lease at Sorrento of Miramar isn’t being renewed. Okay, so it’s not being renewed, what of it? She is being thrown out because she didn’t provide a ultrasound image to her landlord while she was pregnant. Wait.. what? Yep, Davis said she got a call from Jose Galindo, the assistant property manager who told her, “We’re not going to renew your lease because of your pregnancy.” Davis said she was told she didn’t comply with an apparent policy for pregnant women. “You have to give me an ultrasound and a letter from the doctor stating your due date. After giving Galindo the evil eye, Davis went straight to her lawyer. Fair housing advocates and Davis’ attorney are calling the practice outrageous and have filed a lawsuit.

Rental Agreement

To ask for a photograph of the inside of a mother’s womb is so intrusive, invasive, it has absolutely no business reason for being in an application for rent,” said Keenya Robertson, president and CEO of Housing Opportunities Project for Excellence or HOPE. The lawsuit says Davis was visibly pregnant when she signed her rental agreement. The privately owned complex, partially financed by tax dollars, wouldn’t comment. “You’re denying housing to those people who this housing was intended to benefit,” Robertson said. “You’re not doing what it is you said you’d do when you took our tax dollars to make this housing available.” Broward County housing official Ralph Stone says the county will also sue to stop the practice. In the meantime Davis is out looking for another apartment. Because of a massive affordable housing shortage, it took Davis almost a year to get into Sorrento. I don’t know how these people sleep at night. Sue the hell out of them Tiesha.
