N’na Fanta Camara scammed more than 700 women.

N’na Fanta Camara, a healer from Guinea, in Western Africa, was recently arrested for conning over 700 women into thinking they were pregnant. The women were told not to see doctors despite the pregnancies lasting up to 16 months. Camara made the women think they were pregnant by giving them a mixture of leaves, herbs and other undisclosed medicines. The concoction bloated the women’s stomach giving them the impression they were with child. According to the BBC, her desperate patients paid around $33  for her services,  in a country where the average monthly wage is a mere $40. Police say she earned thousands each month from her scam, but Camara claims she was “only trying to help”. On Tuesday, more than 200 women protested outside the police station in the Guinean capital of Conakry where Ms Camara was held. According to one of the victims, “During our first visit, she gave us some medicines of leaves and herbs that made us vomit. She assured us that this was good for us. As one continues to take these medicines, the stomach starts to rise a bit. After a while, we visited again, she examined us by just touching our bellies and she declared us pregnant. We experienced our normal menstrual cycle during this period. On the day she declared any woman pregnant, she had to give her fabric and a hen, after the initially payment.” Some of the women reported looking pregnant for 12 to 16 months. A police doctor has examined 47 of the affected women and said they risked long-term complications from the treatment. Camara, was found guilty of fraud and impersonating a doctor by giving the women harmful substances and endangering their lives. She was given 5 years and ordered to pay $165,000 in compensation. Two other accomplices were convicted of similar charges and were sentenced to 3 years and four years in prison.
