Back in the day a gentleman held the door for a lady or gave up his seat on the bus. This is just what men did and what I was taught. Although I was raised in a two parent family, my momma did most of the raising and most of the tearing down if somebody was smelling they self. For those who don’t know that phrase, “Just because you are smelling yo self, don’t think I won’t smack those lips clean off yo face,” well it comes from when children become adolescents. Nothing says you a man now like the first time you smell muss under your arms. You get to walking around and swing yo arms and then you get the biggest smile on your face when a grownup tells you, ” you smell musty, we going to have to start buying you deodorant.” You go outside to your friends because you want them to smell it too. “I’m almost a man now, mamma said she needs to buy me deodorant!” True story. Anywho, there are a couple theories as to why men started opening door for women and giving them their seats.
They both revolve around protecting the women from harm… well kinda. Back in the day when women wore impossible large dresses, it was difficult for them to open a door, so men started doing it or them. Those women who were economically less advantaged often carried children in their arms. Since the man’s hands were usually free, he would open the door for them. As for letting a women have a seat, this was part protection and part chauvinism. The protection part came from the fact that you could see better who was about to strike standing up then sitting down. The chauvinism part came from the fact that men didn’t like a women’s head to be above theirs. Don’t kill the messenger, I just reporting it. Anywho, as time went on it just became a tradition in European societies.
We all have seen the pictures on social media where some men have lost their respect for women. I don’t think women are helpless people and I respect those who would prefer to open their own doors and take a seat or leave it. But I am not talking about something as mundane as traditional manners. I want you to watch the video below:
Now I m going to say it. This shit has got to stop. I have seen a video from Fay Nelson who talked about the same thing and read an article from a reporter on the Root that talked about it. I am so mad I couldn’t find those reports or video’s. I am almost sure there are other successful black women on social media and other news blogs that are being preyed upon by insecure sexual deviants. There is no way in #@!! this shit is sexy or funny. As a matter of fact its illegal. I don’t know what kind of man would send pictures of his private parts to a women he has never met but he needs to check himself. In this age where female people of color are being killed and attacked by the thousands every day, where when I look across my news feed and see women of color uplifting men of color on every corner of this planet and I see this bullshit. I am ashamed. If you see this on your social media say something. Don’t let this shit keep standing brothers. Smack them lips across the room.
