When Your Heart Breaks

Porsha Owens 28, killed in front of her 3 children by carjacker.

I wasn’t going write tonight. As news cycles go, we have plenty to read on our mainstream news outlets. I was going to cover them after the hoopla died down. But after going through today’s news, I read an article that broke my heart. Today in Castle Point, Mo., a young black child witnesses the unthinkable. Just as devastating as a mother or father who loses a child to some unfathomable fate or circumstance. Something that will follow him the rest of his life. A relative says an 8-year-old Missouri boy witnessed a man fatally shoot his mother in an attempted carjacking, then helped his two younger siblings hide before running for help.  Porsha Owens 28,  was killed Monday morning in St. Louis County’s Castle Point neighborhood as she led her children to her car to take them to day care. According to a source, The suspect allegedly pulled up his shirt to cover his face and demanded Owens’ keys, money and purse. Police say that after fatally shooting Owens, he allegedly fled the scene after her car failed to start. Owens’ cousin Keon King told local TV station WFMY that her oldest son stayed with his dying mother until an ambulance arrived. A relative, a cousin of the deceased, said her oldest son told him about her last moments.

She looked up and said to her son, ” I’m sorry, I think I’m about to die.

Usually this is where I would go into some crazy tirade and use a lot of exclamation points and special characters. I’m not going to do it this time, because I am speechless…and mostly numb. They got the 18 year old that allegedly killed her. Mark L. Haywood, a black man, has been charged with murder and robbery in Owens’ shooting death. The family has created a GoFundMe page to help her three children.  I will be back tomorrow with other news.
