Emergency UN Security Council Meeting Underway

Crimes against humanity.

It happened, now you own it. The United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting today in response to the United States led attack on Syria last night. The United States along with British and French allies attacked Syrian chemical weapons depots, R&D facilities and infrastructure that facilitated the manufacture and deployment of chemical weapons against the country’s civilian population. The President issued a stark warning to Syria and it Russian handler, telling the despot regime, ” The United States is “locked and loaded” to strike again if Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad’s government again uses chemical weapons.” During the President’s televised broadcast Friday evening, he said, “These are not the actions of a man. They are crimes of a monster instead.” A fact that was reiterated by the U.S and British delegates during their summations, and the legal precedent set by the International War Crimes Court at the Hague, which established ,” crimes against humanity.”

Still the foreign policy agenda of this administration concerning Syria is as confusing as a black Trump supporter. The attack came one day after the President said he had plans to remove U.S. troops from the fighting, claiming ISIS had been defeated and the mission had been accomplished. The same slogan he used after the missile attack and the same one George W. Bush used to declare the end on hostilities in Iraq. The conflict in Iraq has been the longest military engagement in American history. The ongoing conflict started in 1990 after Saddam Hussein attempted to assassinate George H Bush and invaded Kuwait. We have been there almost 30 yrs. Another curiosity is that this administration has allowed less than 100 Syrian refugees in this country in the last fiscal year and Syria was one of the eight countries the President had place on his travel ban. Hardly the actions of a benevolent provider of truth, justice and the American way. Critics of President Trump also point to the fact that the President is known to divert attention from one area of media interest to another and wonder if the attack was a diversion from the President’s legal troubles here at home. This week the President’s personal lawyer, Michael Cohen’s office was invaded by the FBI. They seized Mr Cohen’s personal phone, computers, files and documents, all related to payoff’s he made allegedly on the President’s behalf. In addition the President has been under considerable stress from the ongoing Russia probe by Special Council, Robert Mueller.

Assad’s government use of chemical weapons.

As Jasmine said in the movie Independence Day, “I voted for the other guy,” and like Jasmine, I voted for the other guy, but even a clock is right twice a day. After WWI the international community banned the use of chemical and biological weapons in 1925. Calling the weapons, “barbarous inventions,” the Geneva Protocol banned any methods of warfare which asphyxiated or poisoned, and all bacteriological methods of warfare. Despite the millions who lost their lives in WWII, the combatants did not use chemical or biological weapons and the protocol has been respected by nearly every country involved in armed conflicts for the last 90 years.
