Super Bowl XX.. The Bears Shuffling Crew

On January 26, 1986, the bears defeated the Patriots at the Superdome in New Orleans. The score was 46-10. Wynton Marsalis performed the National Anthem and it was watched by more than 92 million people. At the time the Bears set records or tied records for most sacks (7) and fewest yards allowed. (7) But besides the score, there was another thing the bears did that would go down in music history. They did a music video called the “Superbowl Shuffle.” It was released December 3rd, 1985 and recorded the day after their only loss of the season at the hands of the Miami Dolphins.  It peaked at No. 41 in February 1986 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The single sold more than 500,000 copies and they were the first sports team to have their own rap video.  The song was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1985 for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group, but lost to   “Kiss” by Prince. Over $300,000 in profits from the song and music video was donated to the Chicago Community Trust to help needy families in Chicago with clothing, shelter, and food. The song was written by Richard E. Meyer and Melvin Owens. Twenty four players participated in the video, including “Sweetness,” Walter Payton. Defensive end Dan Hampton declined involvement with the Shuffle, thinking it may have been too arrogant. Anywho.. enjoy a blast from the past.
